schnepp,allison_peds_2014As Seventh Grade Algebra scholars study exponential functions and half lives in particular they are tackling a real world problem.  Asking the question, “What is the future of lead in the children of Flint, Michigan?” scholars are learning about the biological effects of lead and the mathematics of biological half-lives. To that end, they Skyped with Dr. Allison Schnepp of the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan to learn first-hand about what has been happening in Flint since the lead crisis began 2 years ago. Through the eyes of mathematicians, these scholars are planning to raise public awareness by submitting Op Ed articles about the crisis to various newspapers, including the New York Times and the Boston Globe.
