Written by Caroline M., McAuliffe Scholar, Class of 2016

I’ve been at McAuliffe since 6th grade and in my three years here I’ve learned so much about myself and the people around me. Since coming to this school, I have had the opportunity to get to know people from other towns and other backgrounds. I live in Framingham but some of my closest friends are from Ashland and Natick.

When I was in 5th grade I was so shy.  I would have never been able to get up in front of a group of adults and give a presentation. However, my teachers have pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. The type of projects we do at McAuliffe require me to present in front of my peers, my family and to members of the community. I can honestly say that I don’t even think twice about giving presentations anymore. My teachers, my crew and my friends have supported me through this journey and I value the confidence that I have been able to develop as a result of being a scholar at McAuliffe.

The fieldwork that we take at McAuliffe brought me closer to people that I might not otherwise have known. In 7th grade, we went white water rafting. In one raft, there were 9 people. All of us had to work together to get down the river, but along the way there were obstacles. There were also checkpoints where our group could play a game. One game was when four people stood on the corners of the raft and tried to not fall into the water while the raft was spinning. Three people volunteered, and they needed one more person, so I volunteered myself which pushed me out of my comfort zone. Everyone encouraged me and supported me. My crew cheered for me which made me feel more confident. They said things to me such as “wow you really pushed yourself” and “good job”.

After that day, I feel like I’m able to step out of my comfort zone more easily, knowing that both my teachers and my classmates will support me.  As I look back at my time at McAuliffe, I’ve learned so much not only academically, but about myself as well. I now know that my ideas are good ideas too. McAuliffe Crew helped me to realize this since in Crew every voice is important, everyone is heard. My 7th grade fieldwork was what helped me to realize this.
