MA.P.S. is an Enrichment Class that teaches about the value of and skills needed for successful philanthropy. This year’s MA.P.S. group began by discussing causes that were important to them. They broke into specific interest groups and researched such causes as: orphans, endangered species, disease and homelessness. Each group created and shared a powerpoint presentation on their cause. As a group, they discussed the merits of each and selected Homeless Children as the cause we would be supporting.
Next the entire group dove into researching and vetting charities that are dedicated to helping the homeless. Charities were analyzed with several metrics. The group looked at how well the charity’s mission matched the cause they had selected, how large the organization is, where it is located and who it serves. They also learned how to check what percentage of raised funds actually goes to services and programs as opposed to administration and fundraising. They checked the transparency scores of the charities, and learned what this meant. After this scrutiny, the group chose to raise funds for School on Wheels.
School on Wheels focuses on Homeless Children. School on Wheels’ mission statement is “ to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and one-on-one mentoring so children can reach their full potential.”
School on Wheels actively seeks out and identifies homeless children. They help them enroll in schools, provide free tutoring, and backpacks full of supplies. Their vision is “that all children have the academic support necessary to achieve a bright and productive future that will help end the cycle of homelessness.”
MA.P.S. hopes you share their passion for helping homeless children. Nothing seems more appropriate to this group of McAuliffe scholars than to share the benefit of education with other school aged children.
